In wrestling, a pin occurs when you are able to hold your opponent’s head and shoulders to the mat for a certain period of time. When this happens in folkstyle wrestling matches, the attacking wrestler is awarded 3 points. This is your goal in any wrestling match.

Half Nelson

A half nelson is a move that involves controlling your opponent’s head and one of your legs or arms simultaneously. This position can be used to apply pressure and get your opponent’s shoulders to the mat.

Ankle Pick

An ankle pick is a move that involves grabbing your opponent’s ankle while having a collar tie. When done right, your opponent will end up falling backward because you are using leverage nd body weight against them.

Firemans Carry

Apply hip pressure on the head to make it more difficult for the opponent to successfully take you down to the mat.

Granby Roll

Consistently Train

It should go without saying but the best way to improve your game is to make jiu-jitsu a consistent part of your life. You can see serious progression in your skills even with three training sessions a week.

If you have goals of getting to ADCC or winning large IBJJF tournaments, three times a week may not cut it (unless you are a freak of an athlete).

Record Your Rolls

Some coaches do not like this and some of your teammates may not appreciate being recorded. Always be respectful of other people’s wishes when it comes to recording your rolls and make sure you are following the guidelines we have outlined about how to be a good training partner people actually want to train with (here).

I have found it extremely helpful to record my rolls, it gives me immediate feedback on what I am doing, both good and bad. Many people shy away from this because they are afraid someone may take it as a sign that you are trying to embarrass them on camera, be sure to assure people that this is clearly not the case and that you are doing it for educational purposes.

How Young Can You Start Jiu-Jitsu?

We understand that many parents who come to us are worried that their kids are going to get hurt if they introduce their kids to martial arts too young. They come to us and ask to get more reassurance that they will be safe and unharmed while training. The fact of the matter is that anyone making these claims is not only lying to you but should not be trusted.

Every parent is different, some parents think that they should enroll their child as early as possible while others are reluctant because it it too physically demanding. There is no specific answer to this question.

The age at which you should introduce your child to Brazilian jiu-jitsu depends on the kid’s ability to learn and grow. At the age of 4, a kid can start training BJJ but starting too early may cause the child to not like the sport. If we had to give it a number, anything around the age of 7 or 8 is a good range to start your child in BJJ training if you want them to get a headstart.

Even the age of 10 is a great time to introduce your kid to the sport, you know them and their personality better than we do so make a judgment call there.

How to Know if Your Child is Ready for Jiu-Jitsu Training

Every child is going to be unique. They all have varying levels of physical, mental, and emotional attributes. How can you recognize that your child is ready to learn jiu-jitsu? Here are some factors to consider when trying to make that decision:

  1. How effectively do they communicate

  2. Can they go to the bathroom on their own

  3. Do they show a level of interest in sports or physical activities

  4. Can they focus on something for a good period of time

  5. How good are they at following rules

If your child is good at the majority of the things on the list, we would say your child is ready to start training in BJJ.

Should Your Child Compete in Tournaments?

We may be jumping the gun here because you are still in the stage of discovering if you even want to sign your kid up in the first place. The best part about BJJ is the fact that there are many ways to put your skills to the test against other people.

Competition is great for children. Competition where they have to completely rely on their own skills and abilities is even better. From a very young age they will learn what defeat feels like and what winning feels like at their own hand, many adults don’t even get the opportunity till they are done with college.

Giving your child this gift is a blessing that they will not even be aware of how impactful it will be. As parents and coaches it is our duty to help guide them through those feelings but giving them the space to experience these things only serves them in the long run.

Children’s Belt Ranks & Age Divisions

Dirrent jiu-jitsu schools teach children of different age groups. These age groups are typically he following:

  • 5 to 7 years of age

This will be the minimum age group that children can be enrolled in a jiu-jitsu school. At this age, children are blank canvas having no knowledge about the game.

  • 8 to 12 years of age

Physical training begins at this age. Most of the kids in this age group will compete with classes being 45-60 minutes.

  • 13 to 16 years of age

Kids in this age range are not treated like children anymore. As teens, they are physically and mentally stronger. Their training involves understanding and following the mentor’s instructions during the training lessons.

  • 17+

Kids in this age range are training as adults.

Childrens Belt System

For those who do not know, the child ranking system is different than the adult system. The belts that a child can receive in Brazilian jiu-jits are the following in order:

  • White Belt

  • Grey Belt

  • Yellow Belt

  • Orange Belt

  • Green Belt

By the time a kid gets promoted to an orange or green belt it is common to see them jump right into a BJJ blue belt at the age of 16. Sixteen is the minimum age for someone to get their blue belt in BJJ.

Things to Note For Parents

As parents, if your kid wants to pursue a career in jiu-jitsu it is important to keep these things front of mind:

  1. Health and medical evaluations

  2. Searching for skilled instructors and skilled gyms

  3. Do not put too much pressure on children’s performance (only build resentment)

  4. Encourage Consistency

  5. Support the child’s development and encourage hard work on and off the mats

Every Grappler Needs A Solid Foundation

Okay, so you may be starting training without having any kind of physical exercise in years. While this is not ideal, it is also not the end of the world. The best way to get dials in and build a solid foundation for yourself so you can stick around for the long haul is the following:

  • Get clear on your goals

The Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) is the Olympics for Grappling. This is the biggest tournament that the majority of the athletes have been training for years for the chance to compete in. Only the best of the best get to make it to this stage and compete at the shot to be crowned champion in their division. How to get an ADCC Invite

An ADCC invite is awarded to the winners of each weight class during the ADCC trials. This tournament is only accessible to compete in via indentation. There are hard limits on each weight class for both men and women. Only 16 grapplers are offered the opportunity to compete in each of the men’s weight divisions and 8 for each women’s class.

Currently, there are 5 weight classes for men and (now) 3 for the women’s division (source). By editions, we mean something along the lines of a West Coast trail and an East Coast trail.

ADCC trails are an incredibly challenging tournament that attracts the best of the best within a given region. Hundreds of the top competitors from all across the globe are competing for a shot at glory. They are willing to put everything on the line in order to get their chance.

It is common to see top MMA fighters, former IBJJF world champions, and ADCC veterans all competing in these trials.

Personal Selection

The only other way to get an invite to ADCC is to get personally selected by the organizers. This is how the other half of the competitors are chosen and how the rest of the invites are chosen. If an athlete wins a medal at the previous edition of the ADCC world championship (gold, silver, or bronze) they usually get offered an invite to return the following year.

This is a personal preference and I believe that tighter more clingy-fitting rash guards are superior to something that is loose fit. Certain body types fo call (or are more comfortable) in looser fitting rash guards but that is not the reality I personally live in so I do not think I am best to speak on that specific term.

Training Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2023 is not only extremely fun but very rewarding. Not only do you get to learn an awesome skill but you get the chance to connect with other people who just want to get better. In BJJ, there are two styles of play, gi, and no-gi.

What To Wear For No Gi Jiu Jitsu Class

The best thing to wear for no-gi training sessions is the following for men and women:

Men

  • Rash Guard
  • Board Shorts or BJJ Shorts (Athletic shorts without pockets)
  • Underwear
  • Spats or Leggings (Optional)

Women

  • Rash Guard
  • Sports Bra
  • Leggings

For both men and women, you have the option to wear more protective gear if you please. If you have a bad knee that you do not want to hurt further, consider getting a knee brace to wear. Rash Guards

Rash guards are athletic clothing that is an essential item to have for your no-gi BJJ attire. Personally, we recommend having a couple of pairs in your closet so that you have a continuous rotation of gear to choose from.

It should be noted that after every training session, you should be washing every bit of gear that you have. It is unacceptable to come to class smelling like yesterday’s training session. Please be respectful of the gym and to your training partners.

Grappling Shorts

Your grappling shorts should not have pockets or metal zippers hanging from them. We want to protect our teammates on the mats at all times and shorts with pockets, velcro, or metal sticking out have the potential to seriously damage someone while training.

No Gi Jiu-Jitsu is much different than what you will expect and see in the traditional gi classes. Rash guards are worn both in no-gi BJJ class and gi classes. If you do not have a clean pair of grappling shorts you can wear gi pants as well.

Optional Protective Gear for BJJ

There is a good amount of protective gear that you can wear to no gi training. If you want to protect specific joints or just want to keep away from any risk of skin infections we highly suggest that you get a couple of the listed items below.

Kneepads, Knee Sleeves, Or Knee Braces

If you have knee problems it is suggested to get a couple of knee braces while training. At the end of the day, BJJ is a very physical sport and accidents do happen. Let’s do our best to protect both ourselves and those that we choose to train Brazilian jiu-jitsu with.

BJJ Spats

We have talked about it quite a bit in this article but what is a gi anyway? A Gi is better known as a kimono in other forms of martial arts. For both men and women inside the gym, you should be wearing a rash guard under your gi. Again, for guys, you have the option of not wearing one but you may increase your risk of getting skin infections or cuts by not doing so. For the safety of everyone inside the gym, we advise you to wear rashguards.

For the women who are picking up the martial art, wearing sports bras underneath a clean rashguard is acceptable and highly recommended.

Rash Guards & Sports Bra (For Women)

Rashguards are tight-fitting athletic clothing that rests on the skin to help prevent cuts and skin-on-skin contact. Women are recommended to wear sports bras underneath their rash guards for added protection. At the end of the day, the choice is yours, if it is uncomfortable for you do not wear it.

Don’t Wear Tee Shirts

It is suggested to not wear loose-fitted cotton tee shirts while training BJJ. Jiu-Jitsu is a physical sport that calls for lots of grabbing and pulling, the shirt may rip to pieces if you decide to go with wearing one while training. Spats or Leggings

Spats and leggings are the best things to wear underneath your gi pants for a number of reasons. I personally do not like having my gi pants on without my spats on, it just feels weird on my skin. Your gi pants generally fit on your body pretty well so you do not have to fear them riding up on you but in the case that someone reaches for your belt you may accidentally pull your buttock out. Having spats or leggings underneath can save the embarrassment.

Rules about what to wear under BJJ gi

There are no “rules” in place that tell you have to wear rashguards underneath your gi. Sometimes people enjoy training without a shirt on and that is totally fine, it is more of a personal preference for me to wear rashguards versus going shirtless. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is rough and gets you sweaty, the idea of someone else’s sweat potentially going on my skin where I may have a cut grosses me out so I always wear spats and a rash guard.

What to Wear Under Gi (When Training)

When you are causally training you can get away with training with or without a rash guard under your gi. Under your gi pants, it is suggested to wear spats, leggings, compression shorts, or tighter-fitting (athletic) underwear.

What to Wear Under Gi (When Competing)

Depending on the tournament format, you may have to compete without a rash guard under your gi in tournaments. Female competitors will wear rashguards and more than likely have sports bras underneath. Under your gi pants, you may be forced to roll your spats higher, if this causes any kind of discomfort you always have the option of just wearing compression shorts underneath your gi pants.

Wehn we say these are second tier we truly mean it. The options below are mainly brands that stick with clothing and are not particularly experts t making guards. Yes, you can dry your jiu-jitsu belt in the dryer if you need to speed up the process of drying your gear in time for training. Just like you, I hate training in wet clothing. It is actually the worst and highly recommend you do not do it. Your jiu-jitsu belt is completely safe from shrinking in the dryer if you dry it for 30 minutes on delicate/low heat. We advise you not to put on high heat because that may lead to shrinking.

Do not dry your gi or gi pants in the dryer unless you want them to shrink. Your jiu-jitsu gi and pants are not safe from the grips of shrinking clothing if you end up putting them in there. It is advised to have multiple gi’s so that if you find yourself in this situation you have a clean one for backup.

Your Brazilian jiu-jitsu gi, gi pants, rash guards, and spats should all be left outside to hang dry for the best drying results. Direct sunlight on the clothing will not cause shrinkage but it may lead to color fading so keep that in mind.

It is important to have a rotation of Gis, rash guards, spats, and other BJJ-related gear so that in the case that you do forget, you still have the ability to train.

We had many answers to the poll, as you can see we had about 18,100 views on the post with a little over 22 people chiming into the question.

There were many mixed results when we asked people but from our perspective it looks like the initial moment that you can expect yourself to feel slightly competent in BJJ is around 6 – 8 months of regular training. Now, what we did also see is that many people, while saying this is true, said that the “click” really happens later on in your jiu-jitsu journey right when you get your purple belt.

“Around purple belt for me,” BJJ Otter said “I learned enough defense to still be in the game out of bad positions and had enough offense to be a legitimate threat to most guys in the room from good positions.”

I believe that his definition more clearly answers the question of when BJJ really starts to click in the brain. It is at that point where you know how to systematically get out of a bad spot and immediately threaten anyone to still come out on top.

Your First Couple Months Will Be Like This

“I understood how easily controlled I was the first time I rolled with a black belt. It took me 3 or 4 months before I got ahold of a new guy and got to actually feel a sense of control over them” said Kevin, one of our followers on Twitter from Colorado.

It in not uncommon to see this happening in the first couple of months of training.

For many, depending on your gym and prior experience, the first couple of months will be different but they all follow a similar patten. You will get beat up a lot.

This is a good thing because 1) our bodies can handle it (and you learn this) and 2) you learn must faster when there are direct consequences to your actions. If you are new white belt reading this, you should not be afraid, BJJ is truly a transformative thing to start doing but it takes real skill to get good at this.

If you go in over zealous, you may just end up getting yourself hurt. Be aware that there are people in the room that know what they are doing. Even at 6 months of training, those people will have an advantage over you.

Learn and soak up as much as you can and show up as often as possible in these first couple of months. They set the tone for your journey.

When Does BJJ Get Easier?

Jiu-Jitsu never really gets easy because by nature, it is a tough thing to do. There are many days when you do not feel like training but you just get up and do it anyways.

If you are consistently training, have an ability to notice your weaknesses, and work on those movements, you will progress much faster in understanding how to be more of a weapon. Does that make things easier? In our opinion not really.

It is hard having another grown person resist your movements and put their body weight on you for an hour a couple of times a week, there is a reason why many people end up quitting BJJ to begin with.

Training Consistency

Here is what you could expect to happen if you are training for these time periods per week.

1 Day Per Week

Here you may notice that you are getting a pretty solid workout but each time you show up you are still getting beat by most people. If you have been coming for months about 1 time per week, you find the occasional sub as you will learn enough of the basics to at least do damage against another white belt.

But for those who are training a couple of times a week, someone who only trains once is a rest round or a round to work on new techniques.

2-3 Days Per Week

This is the sweet spot. Training about 3 times a week keeps a good balance for an individual to get both weight training and BJJ classes in without feeling like you over training or letting the martial art completely take over your life.

At this training cadence, you will can expect to get your belts every two years and see a good amount of progress over time. Now if you are part of the group that we are about to talk about next, you are well on your way to speed running the belt system and possibly winning some tournaments.

4+ Days a Week

The majority of high-level competitors are spending upwards of 10 hours per week (2 classes a day) so if you are training 4 times per week you are inching towards the competitor realm. If you plan on competing in BJJ tournaments, getting a good amount of rolls in throughout the week is ideal.

You will see many of those you enjoy the competition circuit spending this much time in the gym trying to perfect their craft.

Knowing Your Defense, Offense, and Escapes

Knowing how to defend, attack, and escape from bad positions is something that takes a lot of time to master. Typically it will take you years to really develop your game in a way where you feel very confident in all three of these areas.

Being good at escaping bad positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a trait that not many people have. When looking at BJJ, it is easy to get caught up in the flashy takedowns and submissions without paying proper respect to those who have mastered the art of escaping from less-than-ideal spots. It takes complete understanding and control of one’s body to truly excel in submission escapes.

Side control escapes

Escaping side control can be an extremely difficult process. When your opponent has full control of your upper body, it is difficult to regain position, but it is not impossible. Here are a few side control escapes that could be used in a pinch.

Guard Retention

Attempting to retain guard is a solid way of escaping side control. Begin by getting your basic frames; one arm framing against your opponent’s head and the other on their hips.

Once you have your frames, push off to create space, lift your hips, and shrimp away from your opponent. Finally, bring your legs back in between you and your enemy, retaining guard.

Escaping Bad Positions is HUGE for your Progress

The title says it all, if you cannot learn how to escape and defense in bad positions your progress will be stalled. Jiu_jitsu progression is like a step function, one thing will build upon itself, and over time you will learn new attacks that lead you to bad spots that force you to learn new ways to escape and attack all over again.

It is a positive feedback loop that can only really be learned through action and mat time.

Offensive Moves

There are millions of offensive moves to master in the art of Brazilian jiu-jitsu, there are honestly too many out there to name. Plus, by the time you start to read this, there will be a plethora of offensive moves that were created in the meantime. Welcome to the ever-evolving world of BJJ.

In our opinion, a good offense starts with a good defense. Learning other combat sports (like wrestling or judo) also helps with your offensive game since things like takedowns play a huge role in that equation.

Countering and Defense

If you watch the people that are great at escaping bad techniques in the world of jiu-jitsu a few things start to come up time and time again.

Being nimble and having the ability to maneuver out of bad spots as well as a high level of flexibility create the recipe for being great at counter and having strong defense.

Not everyone is going to be nimble or flexible so you have to find your method that matches your style of play and body type.

That could come in the form of speed, footwork, strength, or just being more aggressive than the other person. Whatever it is, you have to master the escapes, countering, and attacking.

3 Ways to Improve Your Jiu-Jitsu

1) Record Yourself

Recording yourself against people that are slightly better than you or that you are slightly better than is a great way to improve your jiu-jitsu. Noticing the little mistakes you make along the way or seeing what went right is a huge advantage for you.

When you start to notice the good things you do, you will start to also notice when you are finding yourself in those favorable positions. When you get there, it becomes second nature for the actions you need to take.

2) Study

Recording yourself, studying your own matches, and studying other high-level people’s matches is an activity with a high return on investment. Studying film has and always will be beneficial for those looking to get to the highest level. the moment you become a student the game is the moment that you start to separate yourself from the crowd and really get to the next level.

3) Drill More

Drilling has a bad rep.

A lot of people think it is boring and most of the time that falls on the instructor in all honesty. Drilling is another one of those activities that has a massive benefit for those who really want to improve their game.
