Acquiring skills is arguably one of the most important aspects of life that many people do not talk about. It is more popular to sell a course to someone giving them wishful thoughts than it is to put your feet on the ground and acquire something the world can pay you for. We recently interviewed a black belt who had interesting views on the state of the world and how a generation of kids are focused on the wrong things in their 20s.
Acquiring skills is no easy task and it takes time to do so. An entire generation of young adults has been brought to believe that they are special no matter what and that everyone deserves a happy life. We will not be one of those people that lie to you. You have to earn everything in this life. Whether someone accepts that as truth or not is their issue. Because the individual we spoke to about this topic was a black belt in BJJ we sat down and tried to understand what the sport inherently teaches you if you decide to let at it.
Actual skill is formed here. Learning how to gracefully lose so that you can learn how to win is an elite-level quality that most people do not possess. This morphs you into a person of character in the process. If you are constantly training and putting your mind and body in stressful situations by default you become someone calloused to the idea of a stressful situation.
What do people even consider stressful these days? Honestly. If you ask any young person they do not know what real stress is 99% of the time, they get stressed because they have too many emails, or have a busy weekend getting drunk with Stacey.
Jiu-jitsu does not create character, it shows it. If you are a mentally weak person who folds under pressure it will show. This does not mean you have to be this type of person forever though. Personal growth is bound to happen if you let the sport change you.
Your progress and growth is the only thing that matters at the end of the day. Jiu-jitsu has taught us how to show up for the world. It has helped us understand what is stressful and overall positively increased our mood.
Jiu-jitsu will not change for you it is a sacred art form that should be treated as such. If you let it, it will change you.
What is Jiu-Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport based on ground fighting and submission holds. This is what you get when you Google search it. When you practice jiu-jitsu you learn very quickly it is much more. Jiu Jitsu is the art of learning how to lose so that you can learn what not to do and learn to win. Stress Testing yourself daily is not something many people are doing these days. Matter of fact, you are in the minority of human beings on the planet right now just by participating in the sport and putting yourself under this type of stress. No one does hard things anymore. They run away from them.
