Do you want to be calm under pressure and be able to make lightning-fast decisions with ease? We may have found the hidden secret to your issue then and it’s called Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a transformative sport that allows the person who embraces the principles it carries to change their life for the better completely. In this article, we break down some of the mental health benefits of Brazilian jiu-jitsu!
Mental Benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Developing a solid relationship with yourself and taking care of your mental well-being is integral to living a happy life. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a transformative sport that can impact just that.
Mental health has been a growing topic of discussion in the world over the past couple of years and continues to be the front of mind for a lot of people. Exercise itself is a great way to work on your mental well-being because it gets you moving and helps create a new version of yourself. Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is obviously a sport that is physical but something most people do not consider is the mental benefits you get from training on a regular basis.
Changing How You See Yourself
Changing how you view yourself is the first step to developing a better relationship with yourself. Self-care is needed to live a happy and healthy life; it all starts with how you physically view yourself.
Working out and staying in shape has been proven to be an effective way to feel better. Obviously, when you take on jiu-jitsu, you are choosing a new form of exercise. This form of exercise will be a bit different though… it is not only going to push you to new heights but also help recreate how you view yourself.
When humans are on a journey of self-mastery some beautiful things happen. We understand that perfection is never a reasonable thing to shoot for but why not try our best to be the best that we possibly can and accept all our flaws and shortcomings along the way?

Doing Hard Things
Doing the hard things in life is the way you create a life worth living.
Nothing in life that is given out easily is ever worth it in the long run. Short-sightedness is a disease and trap that many people fall into and when you jump into learning the skill of Brazilian jiu-jitsu you will be confronted with a choice. The easy way (quit and never come back) or the hard way (work your way through the system and embrace change).
When you choose to do the hard things in life you are telling the universe that you are serious about recreating yourself and embracing the change that is about to happen. This makes you mentally strong and a warrior all in one!
Handling Pressure and Stress
No one that does this sport will tell you that it is easy and if they do, they are lying to your face and should not be trusted.
Handling stress and pressure is something you get accustomed to very quickly while training in jiu-jitsu. When you roll live for the first time, it is a weird feeling, but as you get more training, you realize that it’s the best part of the night each week.
When another person is in front of you actively trying to work moves that could hurt you, you have to learn how to define, think on your toes, and how to handle an opponent’s moves. Getting out of bad positions you may find yourself in by thinking of the better solution is a great exercise that has real-world applications.
Most people who train jiu-jitsu have full-time jobs and lives outside of the mat. Sometimes those things outside of those four walls can be extremely stressful and jiu-jitsu gives us an outlet to release that stress or an effective way to handle that stress.
Learning New Skills

Learning is fun. When you embrace the journey of learning new skills you find that life is very enjoyable. Every hobby you pick up will seem like new candy that you just discovered!
Now, imagine doing that with a group of friends who also found the same candy, you all get to have a great time basking in the newfound joy!
Learning new skills with people who also love to learn is something that fosters a strong community. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu community is like no other hobby sports community. We all love to learn and push ourselves on a daily basis to move an inch forward on our own personal journey.
