Everything in life is a competition. To stand out in the world you have to rise to the occasion and put yourself out there. Putting yourself out there to fail is a big deal because it proves to others and yourself that you are serious about what you are looking to accomplish. Jiu-Jitsu has been a sport that has done this exact thing for us and there is no better way to put yourself out there than to participate in tournaments. In this article, we will discuss everything you need to know about the competitive BJJ organization, Jiu-Jitsu World League!
WHAT IS THE JIU-JITSU WORLD LEAGUE?
Jiu Jitsu World League is a competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu organization that ranks fights through a series of tournaments using innovative technology, data, and events services. Jiu Jitsu World League has hosted massive tournaments all around the United States at this point and is planning to continue this trend going into 2023.
Using their software they are able to rank academies and competitors all across the United States and match them up with top talent in an arena suited for combat.
Pricing For Events
It is important to note that if you are a competitor, prices increase as you get closer to the event. They seem to start out at $89 and then build their way up as you get closer to the competition date.
Adults (18): $20
Teens (13-17): $10
Kids (4-12): $5
What Type of Brackets Does JJWL Use?
Jiu Jitsu World League’s Tournaments are all double elimination for brackets 4 or above, so if you lose before the finals you can compete again for 3rd place.
So if you lose, the best you can do is 3rd place. To win first place or second place you have to win. We like this tournament style a lot. Most tournaments we have competed in till this point has been single elimination and it is never a good feeling when you put months of training in just to lose in the first or second match you have and be done.
For Gi Competitions
If you are competing in adults Gi tournament, you can wear a rash guard under your gi! You are not limited to just wearing blue, black, or white Gi’s when you compete. You can compete in any gi that is a solid color!
JIU-JITSU’S POPULARITY BOOM
Jiu-jitsu has been exploding in popularity the past few years. We started not too long ago but it is very easy to notice when you start seeing massive competitive leagues form like JJWL or AZBJJL.
We believe the popularity of jiu-jitsu has exploded due to a number things.
Back in 2020 when we were all locked down, some of the only sports we were able to watch on TV was the UFC. I liked watching UFC fights before 2020 but I became absolutely obsessed with the fighters in 2020, the thrill and excitement of adults going at it were unmatched compared to any other sport. But how does this relate to BJJ?
Not very many people want to volunteer to get their face punched in at a UFC gym so what is a great alternative that the majority of people can do? Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-jitsu is truly the everyday person’s sport. It is a martial art that anyone can do and one that anyone can sign up for! This is why we think it is exploding in popularity! Mix in the fact that adults are opting their kids out of sports that could cause CTE down the road and you have a recipe for explosive growth as an industry!
WHY YOU SHOULD COMPETE IN JIU-JITSU TOURNAMENTS
Jiu Jitsu is a competitive sport by nature. Each night you go into your training you are directly competing with those that show up in that class, but the importance of testing your skills in a live scenario is extremely important for the improvement of your game.
We can kind of fall into a trap when we do not compete, we can feel as though we are getting better when compared to those around us, but the real test is how we do against those that we do not get ample opportunities to beat.
Competing in tournaments is fun.
There is nothing like the adrenaline rush of walking onto the mats right before you go in front of a crowd of people. JJWL’s is double elimination is great for fighters because it gives adults and children an opportunity to still compete for something even if their first or second match does not go as they planned.
Fighters should consult with your coach before signing up for a tournament. They will give you the green light on whether you are ready or not to jump into the competitor lifestyle.
There is a huge difference in speed when competing. The likelihood that you gas yourself out is pretty high if you are not mentally prepared for what you are signing up for. I know going into 2023, we are really looking forward to the competition circuit in our state.
