Welcome to Grapplers Graveyard, the home for all things related to combat sports, recovery, and fitness. A couple of weeks ago we connected with Team Sanabul and they were kind enough to send us a massive haul of products to test out. This post is specifically for the Core Series BJJ Gi that they sent us. We are super grateful to be trusted by them to give our opinion on their products. if you missed our last review on Sanabul’s Essential Gi (Review), go check that out.

As a note, Grapplers Graveyard is an unbiased platform and we take our reviews very seriously. We can see the criteria by which we judge products that come our way on the review methodology page we have live on our site.

On the Graveyard Scale, we are rating this Gi an 8.8. This Gi is an excellent purchase for beginners or intermediate BJJ athletes and fits well to the body. If you are a spectrum size (A1L, A2L, etc.) I suggest getting a size bigger and shrinking it one time. There are virtually no complaints about this Gi, it is built to last by a great company that offers quality products.

Let’s jump into the review!

BJJ Gi Review – Sanabul Core Series Gi

At first glance, I knew this Gi was going to be a good one when I cracked up the packages that were sent our way. I liked the colorway of this product and ultimately got a few compliments inside the gym but what really stood out to me after wearing it a handful of times is the feel and breathability that comes with the gi. The gi feels sturdy and did not shrink after using it a handful of times, washing it, and letting it air dry. If you have been following me on YouTube, you will know I run into this issue a ton because I am one of the spectrum sizes (A1L, A2L, A3L, etc.).

At the end of the day, this gi got a pretty high rating on our end based on the metrics that we looked at that will be outlined more in the later parts of this review. For $80 product this is a steal in our opinion.

It was not the lightest the Gi I have (still holds with Gold BJJ) but overall this was a fantastic product.

Looks (1.6/2)

The Sanabul Core Series Gi is one of the more popular Gi’s that Sanabul has on their website and I understand why. There 6 different colorways to choose from, our personal favorite is the blue and orange one.

In the looks category, we are giving this Sanabul Gi a 1.6 out of 2 (total weight of category).

Mobility/Feel/Sturdiness (2/2)

One thing I noticed in the couple of training days I got in the Gi was how mobile I felt when training in the Core Series Competition Gi. The fabric is nice and soft and gave me room to move around in pretty fluidly. I can tell the product was made with quality in mind and the quality comes with sturdiness, I believe this product will last me many years to come.

Shrinking (1/1)

Shrinking is one of the most important aspects of owning a Gi in my opinion. It is such a horrible feeling to spend money for a product that you love (and need) to shrink on you after a handful of uses. Especially if you are a competitor… Being that I compete pretty often, I always have to make sure that the Gi’s I wear are the proper length so I don’t end up getting a DQ.

This category is either a 1 or a 0 and because this Gi did not shrink after a couple of uses, it receives a 1 here. As noted in the earlier paragraph, if you buy this Gi and you are a spectrum size like me (A1L, A2L, A3L, etc.) we suggest going up a normal size. That means if you are an A1L get an A2.

Weight (3.2/4)

This gi is lightweight but not the lightest one that we own. This gi feels like you’re wearing a bit of a larger comforter (for your bed) on you except that it’s made of cotton. When I first started rolling around in it I noticed that it was on the lighter side and it did not overheat me. If you are shopping for a relatively lightweight Gi this is a great option for this price point.

Breathability (1/1)

As mentioned in the above paragraph, this gi is breathable and does not make you feel overheated when rolling. I have had some Gi’s that made me just feel hot… this is not one of them. I felt very athletic and able-bodied when I was rolling around and think overall Sanabul does a great job at creating products that give people this feeling.

Price and Personal Preference

If you are looking for a fair-priced Gi that will last a long time, this Gi is a steal. Most Gi’s on the market is going to cost you upwards of $100, this one comes below that price point, its well made, and built to last.

Buying Sanabul Gis

Pros

  • Lightweight

  • Breathable and promotes athletic movement

  • Pricing is incredible for this product

  • Quality fabric that will last me a long time

Cons

  • I do not have any complaints about this Gi

  • Others have experienced shrinking (so again buy a size up if you are a spectrum size)
