Getting into the best shape of your life is the best way to live a life worth living. In 2023, this is should be the utmost priority for you and the people you care about. The health of people in America is on the decline by the second and we do not want you to fall into that category of people! The best choice we made to get into better shape was to take on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian jiu-jitsu has been known as a martial art that is mainly taken on for self-defense purposes but 99% of the time people stay because it is a fun way to get into excellent condition! In this article, we discuss some of the health benefits of Brazilian JIu-Jitsu!

Health Benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is a martial art taking the world by storm right now. It seems like more and more people are picking up on the benefits that the sport has to offer to those that allow it into their life.
Everyone has different reasons as to why they get started in the first place. One of the main reasons people choose is for the self-defense aspect but the main reason they stay most of the time is due to the amount of fun they are having AND because it forces a new kind of lifestyle out of you.
People are bored with the weight room and are looking for new ways to train and stay healthy. Adopting a new lifestyle along the way is just a plus!

Adopting a New Lifestyle
Are you tired of the mundane workouts that you get at the gym and want a fun, new way to burn calories, lose weight, or just get into the best shape of your life? Look no further than Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Losing Weight – A Calorie Burning Machine
We have seen a good handful of people at the gyms we train at lose 50+ lbs training jiu-jitsu. Now, these people have chosen to stick around for some time and truly allowed the effects of BJJ to kick in. When you go to training with the goal in mind to get into better shape you need to be rolling. Going to the fundamental class is great for getting the basics down but the real benefits are piecing it all together in the advanced levels classes.
This can be an intimidating thing at first but when you throw yourself into the pool, you force yourself to swim.
When you roll you sweat a ton. Training in the Gi will leave you drenched in sweat by the end of the class. Even training no-gi will have you this way, it is just the nature of the sport!
Changing Your Diet
Changing up your diet to allow your body to stay at its peak is going to be key. Jiu-jitsu forces you to do this because when you start rolling you can feel the difference in the sessions.
When you eat like crap you will feel like crap on the mats and when you eat great, you will feel great!
We have contacted a couple of nutrition experts ourselves in our journey of training jiu-jitsu. We try to only intake health foods and make sure to check the labels of all the products we buy at the grocery store.
A huge part of nutrition that gets overlooked by the majority of people is proper supplementation. We take all kinds of supplements, including creatine, fish oil, CBD, high-quality protein powders, or protein packets! This is not something that we took too seriously before we started training Brazilian jiu-jitsu and we have gotten into the best shape of our lives because of it!
Hydration
Hydration is key while training jiu-jitsu.
You sweat a lot when you train so make sure to get the proper amount of fluids into your body so you do not run into any issues!

Getting Aggression Out – Stress Relief
Stress is the number one factor that leads to poor performance and health in America. When people learn how to properly manage stress it is like a weight has been lifted off their shoulders.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu allows you to get all that aggression or stress that you may have stuck in you from the day out! There is nothing like a good session of rolling on the mats and leaving feeling relieved!
Risks of Doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
We are no dummies here when it comes to giving an opinion, we like to give both sides of the argument so you can understand the full picture. Practicing BJJ does not come without risk. Here are some notable things you should be aware of:
- Protect your Knees – Knee injuries can happen if you are not careful with who you roll with
- Joint Pain – if you get submitted, put into an arm bar or knee bar you risk hurting your joints. Tap early, tap often.
- Chipping Teeth – wear a mouthguard!!!
- Spazzy White belts – spazzing into positions only makes your partner mad. You could get hurt or someone else could, do not be a spaz.
Training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu has been one the biggest game changers for us personally in 2022. Going into 2023 we look forward to getting more training under our belt and competing in local tournaments.
