Origin Nomad BJJ Gi Review: Lightweight BJJ Gi

Origin Nomad BJJ Gi Review: Lightweight BJJ Gi

Hey Everyone! We are back again with another gear review this time we got our hands on some BJJ Gi’s. The Origin Nomad Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi, this Gi is the cheapest Gi that is offered from Origin ($133 to $158), and it’s their model of a lightweight Gi to train in. Personally, I really liked this Gi and all the time that we spent in it. It is our second favorite lightweight Gi to train in, slightly behind the Gold BJJ Arroweave gi that is currently ranked #1 on our list of best bjj gis

Origin’s products are some of the most premier products in the Brazilian jiu-jitsu industry. We love their gear, we love what they offer, but it does come with a premium price. For $133-$158, you get a great product that will last you a long time and has high quality standards.

As always, we review with a scale that we use internally known as the Graveyard Scale (here) this is a scale that we use to help us rate the gear that we get our hands on from 1 – 10. For BJJ Gis, our main review criteria are: Fit & Comfort, Mobility & Weight, Shrinkage & Maintenance, Durability & Construction, and Price/Value.

To it, we’re ranking this in our top 5 (another Origin Gi that did this) of one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu gis on the market. Giving this Brazilian jiu-jitsu gi a score of 9.25 out of 10 tying with the Venum x Assassin’s Creed BJJ Gi we recently reviewed.

Here is the list of Gi’s we have ranked thus far:

  1. Gold BJJ 9.6 / 10 – review
  2. Origin Atleta Gi 9.5 / 10 – review
  3. Future Kimonos (not sold anymore) 9.5 / 10 – review
  4. Origin Nomad BJJ Gi  9.25 / 10 – review
  5. Venum x Assassin’s Creed Shadows 9.25 / 10 – review
  6. Sanabul Highlight Pro 8.8/ 10 – review
  7. Sanabul Core Series 8.5 / 10 – review
  8. Sanabul Essentials 8 / 10 – review
  9. Elite Sports 7.4 / 10 – review
  10. Shogun Jiu Jitsu 7.3  /10 – review
  11. Moya Brand (no score)
  12. Hayabusa Gi (no score) – review

Reminder: We are on a mission to help people find the best combat sports gear across categories. Our goal is to review a list that consists of 8 to 12 more Gis and share our thoughts to the following Reddit communities r/fightgear, r/grapplersgraveyard, r/bjj and r/jiujitsu.

Origin BJJ Gi review

Overview of the Origin Nomad BJJ Gi

At the end of the day, the Origin Nomad is just a great all-around gi. I’m a big fan of lightweight gis in general, especially living in Arizona where training in the summer can get brutal, and this one fits perfectly into that rotation. I have zero doubt this will stay in my lineup for a long time.

Both Origin gis I’ve tested so far have lived up to the hype in terms of quality, and I’m planning to grab the other two they offer so I can keep giving you guys the most accurate breakdowns possible.

Overall, this is easily one of my favorite gis in the collection. It’s consistently in the rotation, it performs well, and it holds up.

Video Review: coming soon

Pros

  • Lives up the the lightweight claims
  • Feels good on the body and does not limit my mobility
  • Fits true to size and has no shrinkage after several washes
  • Clearly a premium product
  • Perfect for the summer time and staying cool on the mats

Cons

  • Weird odor when it comes out of the bags – wash before you use
  • More pricey of a product (still worth it in my eyes)

Fit & Comfort (1.5/2)

The Gi fits true to size, very similar to the Origin Atleta we reviewed recently. It’s genuinely a comfortable gi, though I wouldn’t say it’s quite as comfortable as the Atleta. This one is a little thinner, which makes sense since it’s designed to be a lightweight option.

On the mats, it holds up well. I’m rolling 6-minute rounds, about 10 times a week, so I get a pretty solid read on how a gi performs during longer sessions. This one stays comfortable the entire time.

One thing I’ll give Origin credit for is the material quality. Lightweight gis usually come with a downside — they feel thin, and over time they’re more prone to ripping. With Origin, I don’t really get that concern. They’ve built a reputation on durability, and this gi feels like it’s going to last a long time despite being on the lighter end.

  • Fits true to size and delivers legit lightweight comfort
  • Lightweight without sacrificing durability

Mobility & Weight (2/2)

Origin doesn’t list the GSM on the website, so I can’t give you the exact number. But based on feel alone, I’d compare it closely to the Gold BJJ Aeroweave, which is a legit lightweight gi at around 185 GSM. Holding both side by side, they feel almost identical in weight and thickness.

When I’m rolling in this gi, I don’t feel restricted at all — everything moves the way it’s supposed to. I didn’t get to train in the original Atleta pants because I accidentally ordered the wrong size, but the A2 pants I picked up from Origin afterward are incredible. Zero complaints.

Finding gi pants that fit me well is usually a struggle since I’ve got bigger thighs and legs, but these fit perfectly without feeling tight or limiting. Between the jacket and the pants, mobility has been great across the board.

  • Lightweight feel similar to the Gold BJJ Aeroweave. Origin doesn’t list the GSM, but the jacket feels almost identical in weight and thickness to a true lightweight gi around 185 GSM.
  • Excellent mobility with both jacket and pants. The A2 pants fit especially well — even with bigger thighs — and the gi never feels restrictive during rolls.

Shrinkage & Maintenance (2/2)

After a couple of washes, I didn’t notice any shrinkage at all. At this point I’ve washed the gi around 20 times, and the sizing has stayed consistent the whole way through. Super easy to maintain too — I just machine wash it cold and hang-dry both the jacket and the pants.

One thing to note: when I first pulled it out of the package, it had the same weird smell the Origin Atleta had. Not a deal-breaker, just something I’ve noticed with their gis. It goes away after a wash, but worth mentioning.

  • No shrinkage and easy care. After ~20 washes, the gi has held its size perfectly. Just wash cold and hang-dry — super simple.
  • Has a slight factory smell out of the package. Similar to the Atleta, it comes with a weird odor at first, but it disappears after the first wash.

Durability & Construction (2/2)

With anything Origin makes, I’m starting to get the sense that durability is just part of their DNA. This gi feels really well-constructed — no loose threads, no weak spots, nothing that makes you question the build quality. The stitching is strong, everything is reinforced, and it feels solid both fresh out of the wash and during training.

The collar has that same reactive feel the Atleta had, and after a good amount of use, I’m not seeing any fraying or wear anywhere on the gi. Overall, I’d give durability and construction a very high rating.

Price & Value (1.75/2)

Origin sits on the higher end when it comes to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gear. Their products are expensive, and they rarely run sales. Normally this gi goes for around $160 with shipping, though right now it’s about $133 since they’ve got a sale running as I’m writing this. Price aside, the quality matches what you’re paying for it feels premium across the board.

If you’re in a spot where you can comfortably splurge on Origin gear, you really won’t question the purchase. They make some of the best products on the market, plain and simple.

But if you’re more budget-conscious or you’re not someone who cares about having top-tier materials, there are plenty of solid alternatives that cost less. Gold BJJ, Sanabul, and a few others on our Best BJJ Gi list offer great value without the higher price tag.

As for the Nomad specifically, I’d classify it as a training gi because of the lightweight GSM. It’s not IBJJF certified, so if you plan on competing, go with the Origin Atleta instead — that one meets competition regulations.
