Getting your kiddo involved with sports at an early age is crucial to their development as they get older. Doing some type of physical activity has been proven to be extremely beneficial time and time again but there are so many options, which sport do you put them in? In this article, we break down why you should seriously consider jiu-jitsu for your toddlers and teens to participate!

1 on 1 sports like jiu-jitsu have benefits that go way beyond the four walls they train in. Your child will morph into a highly functioning individual that will learn to rely on their skills!

Starting Them Young

When you decide to put your kid into jiu-jitsu you are allowing them to shine for the rest of their life. Jiu Jitsu is an excellent sport for everyone and has several benefits both physically and mentally. Jiu-jitsu is an art form, so it takes real skill to be able to master it. We all want our children to be skillful, productive members of society; this is a perfect opportunity to get them down that path!

We can all agree that empowering children and providing them with skills that make them more confident is a net positive thing for society. We want a better and brighter future for the youth and our future is reliant on them. Getting good at jiu-jitsu gives us the confidence to take on the world head first and be skillful with how we maneuver through it.

Naturally, jiu-jitsu is fun for everyone but no one has more fun than the kids! Find a local gym near you and just observe the kid’s classes, they are always exciting and very engaging. Not to mention, it’s a great way to make new friends!

Many jiu-jitsu gyms have kids’ programs, we would be surprised if one that is local to you does not have one.

Toddlers will not compete as much but if that is what you want them to do when they are of age the opportunity is there! Just check out this match between two 4-year-olds!

Honestly, I don’t know what is cuter than this lol. We are not at the stage where children are in the picture but when that time comes, best believe you will see a mini-me rolling around in the best gi’s!!! It is honestly surprising when we get the opportunity to watch younger kids’ matches, they get unbelievably good at an alarming rate.

Maybe it’s not a good idea to sign your toddler up if you don’t want a little jack-jack running around! 🤣

Benefits of Jiu Jitsu for Young Children (Ages 9 – 17)

All jokes aside, 1 on 1 sports are extremely beneficial to get kids into at a young age. Because of the nature of 1 on 1 sports like jiu-jitsu, it teaches them very quickly how to be self-reliant and trust their skills. This will be a game changer for them later on in life. Not many people have this as full-grown adults… think about how well your child would be if they gained this skill at 15?!

At an alarming rate, we see that more and more kids are experiencing some type of bullying while in school. We hope it never has to come down to this but if a situation were to arise while you’re not around at school they would know how to protect themselves from bullies. We can rest easy knowing that your precious kiddo would be able to responsibly detract a bully or de-escalate a situation.

All things considered, jiu-jitsu may be the best sport to make your toddler or teen at least try out. We grew up playing football and now that we are in our early twenties we wish we could have started when we were in high school. Looking back on it, we do not regret playing the sports we did but the benefits we see in our adult life from picking up jiu-jitsu would have been a game changer for us at 17!

Seriously, get your kids into a class and make them try it out for a month. Most gyms are extremely flexible with trial periods for individuals so it’s worth every penny.

Happy Rolling!
