Islam Makhachev Turns Down UFC 324 Title Fight

Islam Makhachev

Islam Makhachev, the current UFC welterweight champion, has decided not to defend his title at UFC 324 in January 2026. After winning the welterweight belt at UFC 322 against Jack Della Maddalena in November, Makhachev’s choice delays his first title defence. It also changes the early plans for the UFC welterweight division.

Why Makhachev Said No to UFC 324

The UFC reportedly offered Makhachev a title fight at UFC 324. It was set for January 25, 2026, in Las Vegas. But the champion turned it down because the date was too soon after his last fight. He explained that he needs more time to properly prepare for a championship-level fight. January was just too early for him.

Although the UFC hasn’t confirmed the opponent, it was likely that Michael Morales could have been the challenger. Morales recently had a big knockout win at UFC 322. Makhachev’s team said the quick turnaround didn’t give him enough time to train for such a tough fight.

What This Means for UFC 324

With Makhachev out, now, the card will be headlined by an interim lightweight title fight between Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett. Kayla Harrison will defend her bantamweight title in the co-main event against Amanda Nunes. Consequently, the welterweight belt won’t be on the line in January.

Islam Makhachev’s Next Fight Plans

Makhachev has said he plans to return to the octagon after Ramadan, sometime between April and June 2026. This gives him enough time to prepare properly and defend his welterweight title in peak condition.

The champion has also hinted at facing top contenders, including former champion Kamaru Usman. He would be a big test for Makhachev. This shows that Makhachev wants to carefully plan his title reign. He aims to pick fights that matter.

What’s Next in the Welterweight Division

While Makhachev waits for the right moment, the UFC welterweight division continues to heat up. Fighters like Michael Morales, Ian Machado Garry, and Shavkat Rakhmonov are all looking to move up the ranks. They aim to earn a future title shot. Makhachev’s decision to wait instead of rushing a fight shows he’s focused on long-term success rather than quick wins.

Islam Makhachev skipping the UFC 324 title fight is a clear sign that he’s serious about defending his championship the right way. Fans can now look forward to his first defence in spring 2026. This promises to be an exciting matchup against one of the top welterweight contenders.
